About 10 hours before this post was published, DC Comics released the multiple covers of Batman/Superman #1. DC is trying to make it kind of like the Marvel's Infinity, meaning a big deal. It is, but not as big as Infinity. The three covers have been receiving split responses. Here Are the covers now. Even though you probably saw them before you read this. The first one, that you can see on your right, is the one that I personally, don't like. I think Superman looks to buff in his upper body, and then he has little shrimp legs. Plus the suit looks too Superman Returns, and I don't need to be reminded of that, just like Batman & Robin. Batman looks okay, although compared to Superman, he looks like a midget. I know that Superman is flying, but the blend doesn't look very good to me. I would have also liked a better font for the title. Isn't drop shadowing a little 1990's? The other thing I don't like about Batman is the fact that he looks too muck like the Batman Beyond version. You can't see his face, even if there isn't a shadow. The sides of his face are covered. Now unless they are trying to make Batman into Ninja who hides his face, I expected more from DC. Especially because this is considered The New 52. Take away the New 52 sign and the writers' names and I would have thought it was from the 80's or 90's. But the next one is more New 52. By far. It has everything that the first one doesn't, except for the lame font. It has the face of Batman, the more Modern Superman. And the awesome new silhouette trend that a lot of new comics have been adding.
I can totally see why this cover is New 52. although, now that I think of it, The New 52 was Called the New 52 because DC was releasing 52 new comic series. Now unless they had this planned since late 2011, it should be considered The New 53! Plus, if they wanted to add more series later on, they didn't do so well coming up with a title for the big reboot.
The only thing that might trouble me while reading this is Superman. Superman looks a little like the old Superman with the underwear. i can's STAND the Superman with the underwear. That's one of the reasons it was hard to watch Superman Returns and Superman 2-4. Superman 1 was too amazing to criticize with the exception of he Visual Effects.
And Last but sort of not least, considering the first one sucked, the third cover. This one is kind of in the middle of great and terrible. It's what I will call okay...
It's kind of the Action Comics Superman but it's okay. This one is more interesting because it has a background. I have reason to believe that Batman/Superman will take place in Gotham City, not Metropolis. Here's why. Not only did DC release the covers, bu they also released some pages of the actual comic. Now I don't know if this is from the beginning or if they are from somewhere in the middle. But the comics show our favorite Cat Burglar, plus, The background of the third cover looks like Arkham Asylum. Unless Superman picked up the asylum and carried it all the way to Metropolis, villains included, I think that this will be more focused around Batman. Why else would Batman's Name come first. Which I guess is fair because Superman could put all the escaped villains in jail in about hmm, lets see here, 2 SECONDS! DC just doesn't want to admit it or the whole series is doomed to fail, just like the 2006 Aquaman TV series!
That just about wraps up what I have to share for now.
To view 2 unseen draft covers, and the pages from the book,
it also includes some art and pages from Vertigo's Wake Vol. 2
Thanks for reading!
